What is an A/C Recharge and What Does it Do?

An A/C recharge involves adding refrigerant to your vehicle's air conditioning system. Over time, the refrigerant level can decrease due to leaks or normal wear and tear, leading to a less efficient cooling system. Recharging your A/C replenishes the refrigerant to the optimal level, ensuring your A/C blows cold air and functions efficiently.

Signs You May Need an A/C Recharge

  1. Blowing Warm Air: If your A/C is blowing warm or room-temperature air instead of cold air, it might be time for a recharge.
  2. Strange Noises: Unusual sounds when you turn on your A/C can indicate a low refrigerant level.
  3. Visible Leaks: If you notice any refrigerant leaks under your car, it's a clear sign you need an A/C recharge.
  4. Inefficient Cooling: If it takes a long time for your car to cool down, the refrigerant level might be too low.
  5. A/C Clutch Not Engaging: The A/C clutch is responsible for activating the compressor. If it doesn’t engage, it could mean the refrigerant level is too low.

Two Types of Refrigerant:

  • r134a: This refrigerant has been widely used in automotive air conditioning systems for many years. However, r134a has a high “global warming potential” (GWP), leading to environmental concerns. For this reason, car manufacturers have phased out r134a on newer vehicles, but some older models still take this type of refrigerant.

  • r1234yf: As a more environmentally friendly alternative, r1234yf has a significantly lower GWP than r134a. It has become the standard refrigerant for newer vehicles due to its reduced environmental impact.

If you’re experiencing any of the signs mentioned above, it might be time to get your A/C system checked and recharged. Our expert technicians at OC Auto Service specialize in A/C services to keep you cool and comfortable all summer long.
